Markus Hofko: Islands
Islands is a series of sculptures by German artist Markus Hofko, who also goes by the name Rainbowmonkey. The project consists of a growing number of individual floating islands; each one a diorama of a moment in time, with its own tiny population.
From the artist:
“...Isolated pieces of land, that look like they were wrenched from the earth by some force of nature, are floating through nowhere. All that is left is a random group of living beings who do their best to survive.”
My first thought was that Hofko's main influences were the surrealists, but perhaps this idea was more strongly informed by the paintings of British fantasy artist Roger Dean. Great fun, regardless.
