Keliy Anderson-Staley: Off The Grid
Off The Grid is an enthralling collection of photographs by Maine native Keliy Anderson-Staley. The series documents a number of families who live scattered throughout the Maine forests, without any of the services most of us take for granted; electricity, mains water, gas, telephones.
“I do not want to over-romanticize this way of living or over-estimate the role it might play in resolving the global environmental crisis. I feel it is important to engage in discussions about how we live and how our domestic lives impact the broader world.”
The above comes from the photographer's statement about the series; her cabin upbringing—and the fact that she grew up in these surroundings—have informed her work and stopped it becoming over-sentimental.
The pictures show us the simple way in which these families live, filled with peace and beauty but often very difficult; disconnected from “The Grid” which exists to make our lives safer and more convenient.
