Alan Wolfson
Alan Wolfson refers to his stunningly detailed dioramas as “miniature urban sculptures”. These amazing pieces are tiny, isolated vignettes of imagined urban environments; though they are based on real locations—for the most part in and around New York City—many are entirely fictional.
Wolfson is not aiming for faithful realism in these works, but rather an atmosphere; he says this of the creation of Canal St. Cross Section:
The street scene is not an exact representation of Canal Street, but rather a combination of existing and fabricated environments... I decided to throw in the Chinese massage parlor both to give it a touch of Chinatown and also to spice it up a little. The other business establishments on the street were modeled to give the feeling of how Canal Street looked in the late 1970s.
You can see many more of Alan Wolfson's fascinating sculptures in his web archive; Canal St. Cross Section will be on exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design in NYC from June 7th.
