Garry Winogrand
Garry Winogrand was a prolific street photographer, active in several American cities throughout his lifetime. He used a 35mm Leica camera with a fixed focal length lens (as did many of his contemporaries who shot in this journalistic style), producing thousands of beautiful high-contrast monochrome images like those shown above.
“There is nothing in this world that does not have a
decisive moment.”
The above is a quote from Henri Cartier-Bresson's book Images à la sauvette (1952). You can see the influence of Cartier-Bresson on Winogrand's work—each picture captures a precise point in time when the light, framing and subject come together perfectly.
It's interesting to watch Winogrand work in this film; he exhibits a twitchy, almost obsessive shooting style, scanning each scene for the perfect shot.
